Newly minted UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt will have the first defense of his title this summer, as “No Love” is set to take on T.J. Dillashaw at UFC 213 on July 8 in Las Vegas.
Garbrandt (11-0, 6-0 UFC) won the title with a dominant performance over former champion Dominick Cruz at UFC 207 in December. As a UFC champion, the 25-year-old Ohio native is now the face of the Urijah Faber-led Team Alpha Male in California, and will take on his former teammate in this bout.
Dillashaw (14-3, 10-3) is the former UFC bantamweight champion, which he won after defeating Renan Barao in 2014. He successfully defended the title twice against Joe Soto and Barao, before losing it to Cruz last year. Dillashaw also left Team Alpha Male last year to train in Colorado at with the Elevation Fight Team, as well as with former Alpha Male striking coach Duane Ludwig.
With a rivalry already started, these two will serve as coaches on the upcoming 25th season of “The Ultimate Fighter” to help draw even more interest in this grudge match.
Garbrandt will be joined by Faber, Danny Castillo, Fabio Prado and his uncle Bob Meese, while Dillashaw will have assistant coaches in the form of Ludwig, Leister Bowling, Eliot Marshall, and Matt Brown. The two will coach UFC veterans who have all competed on “The Ultimate Fighter” before, including notables with local ties Justin Edwards, Julian Lane, and Hector Urbina.
UFC 213 takes place on July 8 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, and will be the anchor event of the UFC’s International Fight Week.
