Recap – Pinnacle FC 14

Capture

The dust has settled on last night’s Pinnacle FC event and there are some things that are abundantly clear. The trio of professional fighters that walked away with wins all did so by making a statement to where they are and where they wanna go.

The night only ended up with six fights.. One amateur bout featuring Gregg Rudolph was scheduled but his opponent was on his way to the venue shortly after 9 p.m. but never made it.  The three amateur fights were capped off by a strong performance from Anthony Romero who went the distance with Mike Walters to win the PFC amateur lightweight title.

“How many more people do I have to put in the hospital to get my shot”

Devonte Smith (4-0) was pressured by the strong grappling game of Xavier Nash (2-2) during the first round but still found room to land some big shots. The second round found Smith with more openings on the striking game and he started to warm up. It took less than a minute into the third round for “Johnny Cage” to finish the fight with a solid TKO finish. Smith detailed how he wakes up to work driving trucks before heading to training before capping his day off with some weights. When asked what’s next he said “5-0, 6-0, UFC”.

Cherico goes the distance with dominance

Mark Cherico (10-1) avoided nearly everything that D’Juan Owens (14-11-1) was able to throw at him. Cherico used his smothering ground game to keep Owens at Bay. He controlled all 15 minutes of the fight and made Owens miss on nearly all of the wild shots he threw. So “The Pride of Bloomfield” is back and looks like the guy poised to make a run to the Octagon that we’ve seen in the past.

Mazzotta brutal in victory

I’ve been following Dom Mazzotta (11-1) for years and in his last few outings he has looked as good or better than any fighter I’ve seen. He busted up a nasty cut on Keith Richardson (15-8) in the first round that I  honestly thought would have stopped the fight but it did not. Mazzotta sealed the deal and in the process put Richardson to sleep in the second round. I’m a fan of Richardson but Mazzotta looked like he was on another planet for this fight. I don’t know what else Dom has to do to get a big money fight somewhere but hopefully someone watching on FloCombat took notice.
