Fight Lab readies for year end extravaganza

Fight Lab 42

Fight Lab has been growing at a rapid pace over the last several years and show no signs of slowing down any time soon. Kenny Letts, Tom Bakley , Michael “Cornbread” Allen and crew have hit their stride in 2014 putting on sold out events across North Carolina. The promotion who touts their events as a party with some fights in the background close out the year tomorrow night at the Grady Cole Center with Fight Lab 42.

Fight Lab is an oddity, for us at least. They are one of the few promotions outside of the Ohio Valley region that we’ve taken notice of and one of the few that have noticed us. Their brand of MMA has been a breath of fresh air for fans in this saturated market. The appeal is that you get a true one of a kind experience by mixing part night club, part fight club and part social experiment. It is a combination that Kenny Letts and his partners have stuck with since day one.

Friday’s event will be headlined by familiar Fight Lab face Keith “The Rockstar” Richardson. Richardson will make his eighth appearance inside the Fight Lab cage and will do so against Rusty Crowder. Crowder has won four out of his last five outings. He’s been a busy man in 2014 as this will be his fifth fight. Richardson has won three out of his last five bouts with the most recent coming in July. Richardson submitted Eric Calderon in the first round at Fight Lab 38.

In total there are five professional bouts on the card with six of those fighters being Fight Lab veterans. Amateur champ Trey Singleton will be making his professional debut on the card at the ripe old age of 20 as well as Fight Lab alum Nick Grady,Willie Hosch, Cody Wilson, Tommy Dibernardo and of course the aforementioned Richardson.

The amateur fight that has caught our attention is the light heavyweight scrap set between Duran McDonald and Brandon Schofield. We spoke with former 205 pound champ McDonald before the fight and he sounds like a young man who has his mind made up he wants his title back. To do that he’s gonna have to get past Schofield. On paper this is about as evenly matched as they come.

We will be on hand for the party and maybe some of the fights tomorrow night at the Grady Cole Center. Be sure to check back for live results and commentary. Here is a look at the fight card as it stands.
